Kandy, August 2024: In a landmark effort to promote environmental responsibility, Sunlight – Sri Lanka’s most trusted laundry care brand, with a legacy spanning over 135 years spearheaded its ‘Manudamin Wadiyamak’ initiative during the Randoli Perahera, part of the revered Kandy Esala Perahera held from the 13th to the 19th of August. This initiative marks 15 years of collaboration with the Dalada Maligawa, reinforcing the brand’s enduring commitment to national heritage and environmental stewardship. By raising awareness about the detrimental effects of irresponsible polythene and plastic disposal, Sunlight urges participants to adopt eco-friendly practices that will protect the environment for generations to come.
Studies have revealed that a mere 37% of participants at the Kandy Esala Perahera retrieve the polythene and plastic they bring, leaving 63% of it behind, which exacerbates environmental issues and poses a significant challenge for the Municipality and Dalada Maligawa, as the cleanup operation is both difficult and costly. In response, Sunlight’s ‘Manudamin Wadiyamak’ initiative took decisive action to mitigate this impact by reducing plastic usage by distributing fresh cloth to devotees and offering an eco-friendly alternative for seating in exchange for polythene sheets. The collected polythene, amounting to over two Metric Tonnes, will be recycled, further mitigating the environmental impact of this sacred event.
“Sunlight has always been at the forefront of national causes that make a positive impact on our country. Through the ‘Manudamin Wadiyamak’ initiative, we aim to inspire every participant to embrace small changes in their behaviour that collectively lead to significant, positive outcomes for our environment,” said Imeshika Kariyawasam, Marketing Director – Home Care & Nutrition, Unilever Sri Lanka. Kariyawasam added, “It is not just about raising awareness; it’s about taking tangible steps towards creating a cleaner and greener Sri Lanka.”
The campaign also invited devotees to pledge to protect the environment and with over 15,000 pledges it signifies a collective commitment to eco-consciousness. Additionally, Sunlight hosted a ‘Nilmanel Flower Dansala’, distributing approximately 30,000 flowers to devotees, symbolising the brand’s dedication to serving the community and the environment.
Yashasvi Liyanage, Category Head – Fabric Care, Unilever Sri Lanka said “Sunlight’s long-standing presence in Sri Lanka and its unwavering commitment to sustainability has made it the ideal brand to spearhead this initiative. We believe the brand’s continued efforts highlight its belief that every small act can contribute to extraordinary outcomes, making Sri Lanka a better place for everyone.”
The ‘Manudamin Wadiyamak’ campaign is a testament to Unilever Sri Lanka’s enduring ethos of making a lasting, positive impact on the communities it serves and the environment, ensuring that sustainability principles remain at the heart of everything they do.
